ABOUT OUR FOUNDER

MELISSA HERNANDEZ

Melissa Hernandez is a passionate advocate dedicated to raising awareness about harm reduction as a compassionate and effective approach to supporting people who use drugs. She believes that providing safer alternatives, education, and resources can empower individuals to make healthier choices. Through her harm reduction-focused clothing line, Melissa not only spreads this message but also donates 10% of profits to the Puerto Rico Project, which offers essential healthcare, meal programs, and housing support to underserved communities. Each purchase contributes to advocating harm reduction as a viable and life-saving option.

The Puerto Rico Project(PRP)

Founded in 2015, was created in response to the opioid crisis affecting Puerto Rico. Many individuals found themselves on the streets of Chicago without resources, food, or transportation, facing language barriers and cultural challenges. While the number of people from this pipeline on Chicago’s streets has decreased, the need for PRP’s services remains high. PRP continues to address these needs through essential services such as providing meals, harm reduction initiatives, and access to basic human necessities, all delivered with a focus on compassion and connection to the community.

Over the years, PRP has evolved and expanded its outreach, becoming a well-known community resource. This growth has been supported by funders and dedicated team members who strive to bring dignity and quality care to those impacted.

Recent media coverage has highlighted PRP’s impactful work. According to a WGN-TV news report:

“The organization has created a mobile shower unit that can be stationed in different areas of Humboldt Park. It’s believed to be the first of its kind in Chicago.”

This mobile shower service reflects PRP’s dedication to meeting the practical needs of individuals, helping them reclaim dignity and improve their quality of life.
